First Garden Ever

Living in Alaska gives you a new appreciation for the fresh-looking produce available at most grocery stores across the continental U.S. I paid exorbitant prices for berries that would look ok at the store and by the time I drove home they seemed to have sprouted mold. I remember buying the little plastic containers of fresh herbs and being so disappointed with how short their viability as a food was. Knowing instinctively that food is probably better for your health when it’s fresh, my discontent with my existing choices sparked a search for something better.

I did some research and found out that herbs can be grown indoors even in Alaska. I filled up little green pots with whatever garden soil was available at the smallest Wal-Mart in the country and I planted five different herbs. Looking back now at pictures, I realize I overdid it on the rosemary because I stuffed three in one pot and they probably didn’t appreciate the lack of room.

But oh, my. I spent hours sitting on a couch in my tiny apartment nursing my son and staring at my little herb garden. It brought me an absurd amount of joy to obsess over these beauties. That’s definitely when I got the gardening bug, although I certainly didn’t realize how much of a bug it would turn out to be!

If you’re living in a small space, don’t let that hold you back from trying this amazing hobby. If you have even the slightest interest, just start small. If you aren’t even sure where to start, that’s where I come in! Garden Coach to the rescue! It’s my hope that by coaching others through the garden learning curve, everyone will come to experience the joy I feel in the garden - an almost absurd level of joy.
